There is nothing more magnificent than a powerful thunderstorm as it fills the sky with lightning, it showers the earth with heavy rain, and it bends the trees with its furious wind. Unfortunately, there are dark and powerful storms that will eventually threaten each of our lives. Whether it is the death of a loved one, the loss of our own health, the loss of our finances, senseless tragedy, or the consequences of our own sin, we all must face the various storms that eventually torment our souls.
Some people have not yet experienced the devastation of a powerful storm in their life while others have known more than one. Some storms are so intense and furious that they fill our minds with anxious thoughts, they refuse to let us sleep, and they torment our souls for days on end.
“My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me. Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.” Psalms 55:4,5
And yet, it is during life’s darkest storms that some people will finally realize that they must seek shelter in something stronger than themselves or the world. It is during life’s most furious storms that some people will finally humble themselves and call on the Lord for refuge.
“Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer.” Psalms 4:1
Only when we have finally reached this painful and frightening place in our lives do some of us finally turn and take refuge in the Lord. Only when we are threatened by the powerful storms of life, we have come to the end of ourselves, and the world has possibly forsaken us do we finally humble ourselves and cry out to he Lord for refuge.
“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed” Psalms 57:1
If you or someone you know is dealing with dark and powerful storms in your life, then I humbly hope that this book might be used to show you the way to taking refuge in our wonderful Lord. I sincerely hope that this manuscript might be used to offer you a new hope in the midst of the darkness.
"Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him." Psalms 34:8
